PoC and steps to reproduce

Content "n\xff=" can crash libpcre when an application is matching the pattern
\s*=
The crash happens on latest Ubuntu 18.04 amd64 (libpcre.so.3.13.3 ver 8.39-9 ?
https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/libpcre3 ) as of 2018/10/17

Background:
While fuzzing USB Mass Storage on latest Ubuntu, we found that the following
content in the "autorun.inf" file would crash GNOME
(gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor) on latest Ubuntu release

We tracked the bug down to the following lines in

Therefore, the autorun.inf content "icon\xfa=" triggers a crash when gvfs
searches for the pattern "icon\\s*=\\s*+([^,\\r\\n]+)" in it.
Latest Ubuntu is using libpcre.so.3.13.3 for the regex. We created a simple PoC
where we show that an application using the following pattern:

where the second byte (0xff) can take any value between 0xf7 and 0xff.


The crash seems to happen in the "match" function of libpcre.

We believe the regex pattern \s*= is fairly common, and that the bug could be
used to remotely DoS applications using it.
There are also some similar CVE already reported (e.g.
https://www.cvedetails.com/cve/CVE-2017-7186/).
Therefore we think this might be a security issue.

Please find the PoC and steps to reproduce in the attached file.

Although it says "??", we think the location is match+0x3546


rax content is influenced by the second byte
