Other example:

[root@mbox1 ~]# tail -n1 /var/spool/exim/input/W/1eyv8W-00029E-BM-D             
</span></font></p>[root@mbox1 ~]# 

(so no newline at the end)

and from strace

14266 write(6, "[...] span></font></p>.\n", 856) = 856

which means exim added ".\n" but no newline before that.
