It turns out that this is also a bug in PCRE2 (including the just-released
10.31 version) so I have been motivated to diagnose and fix it. Luckily the fix
retrofits to PCRE1 easily enough. However, there's no facility in pcretest to
test REG_STARTEND, and I am not going to add such a thing at this stage
(pcre2test does have the feature and a suitable test has been added). Thank you
for the report. You are in time to make it into the 8.42 release, for which I
expect to put out a release candidate soon. I do keep hoping that each PCRE1
release is the "final release" as it is now 3 years since PCRE2 was released.
Meanwhile, I have committed the patch.
