Yup - thanks for the debug hint. Best would seem to be to reset it on close
of the onward conn; we then get support of multi-message intiating conns for
free. I don't see right off any reason this would break (though we won't get
the ultimate of using a single onward conn for all the messages when they're
routed to the same place. Leave that for later).
