It's not part of exim.

It's part of the Debian exim4-config package,


furthermore for cram-md5 the lookup Debian uses is of the form

client_name =
${extract{1}{:}{${lookup{$host}nwildlsearch{CONFDIR/passwd.client}{$value}fail}}}
client_secret =
${extract{2}{:}{${lookup{$host}nwildlsearch{CONFDIR/passwd.client}{$value}fail}}}

And that seems to work for me with values having # in them.

but the plaintext authenticators use some arcane regex stuff. which probably
handles colons differently, but I can't see it having a problem with '#'.
