I have now identified bug 2025, fixed in Exim 4.89 as the probable cause of this issue.

My discussion with Heiko Schlitterman regarding this issue seems to have dropped off the list.

To summarise, when I was testing with SWAKS, this substitution of an equal sign for a space occurred. If I cut and pasted the MAIL and RCPT lines reported by SWAKS into a telnet session, no substitution occurred.

When I upgraded the Exim binary from 4.86 to 4.89 then no substitution occurred in either case.

We have no explanation, but upgrading seems to offer a solution.
