Given that this issue directly relates to Javascript compatibility, and without
some way to bypass the escape check, PCRE becomes less compatible .. perhaps
one solution is to revive the old PCRE_JAVASCRIPT_COMPAT flag.

That could also help to remove the guesswork about which other options might
also affect Javascript compatibility.
