I was _very_ strongly tempted to reject this on the basis of avoiding being
contaminated with stupidity: if something claims to be a particular library, by
advertising the internal identifiers of that library, then it should match API,
including header files. We should not be polluting our tree with more ifdefs
outside of the OS-specific area, to handle competing library authors doing Very
Silly Things.
Compatibility wins. Barely. With severe misgivings.
