Jeremy, was 20fcb1e pure paranoia, or was it believed to fix the issue in bug
1870 ?

In other words, for 4.89, is it safe to just merge a revert of 20fcb1e to get
things working again in the release branch, while we try to figure out the root
cause and add regression tests for future releases?
