I think you must have caught the web page before an update. I have just looked
at it, and it now reads the same as the 8.39 tarball: \81 is either a back
reference, or the two characters "8" and "1".

In the PCRE2 documentation the wording is: "\81 is always a back reference"
because the behaviour has changed. The ChangeLog for 10.20 says this:
"24. Adjust the treatment of \8 and \9 to be the same as the current Perl
behaviour."
