Option A is simple but ugly. Option B slightly less ugly but requires us to
realise up-front every notifiable behaviour change.

Option C: a more complex .if directive, evaluating a conditional. Plus a
version-number predefined macro (and throw in feature-test macros for all
the compile-time optional features too).
