This is unrelated to 1738 (which was in any case reported for PCRE2). I have
hacked a palliative fix for this. It is in an area of code that has been
completely re-factored for PCRE2, precisely in order to avoid bugs of this
kind, which cropped up too often as PCRE1 was extended over the years.
