This email nudged me to have another dig around. Sure enough, I found 0.42, hidden elsewhere.
The files inside the tar are dated March 1st 1996.
The doc/ChangeLog file lists a number of versions prior to that (25 including 0.42, the earliest referenced being 0.18).

That sounds fairly plausible, though it looks like it could have been on/before 1.60? In 1.62, the ChangeLog references Versions 1.60 and 1.61, but notes that previous entries have been "archived" as of 1.60.
The ChangeLog for 0.57 reveals that earlier entries were also archived before 0.43.
