This looks to be a bit more involved than the previous two issues. For that
reason, I don't think I should try to fix it before the 8.38 release, which is
imminent. A quick look shows that the effect is indeed related to the negation.
Comparing the compiled code of the two cases (with and without \w) indicates
this. Having said that, if I get time before the 8.38 release I will see if
this is actually something trivial after all.
