I now understand. In Perl, *MARK names are unprocessed in any way. However, the
new PCRE2_ALT_VERBNAMES does change things. It probably should take note of
\Q...\E (I had forgotten about those) and, I suppose, it should also notice
PCRE2_EXTENDED (/x) and process spaces and # comments accordingly.
