There's a comment at the top of the main daemon loop saying that the log
is only written to for exceptional conditions, and always closed immediately.
OTOH, the per-connection handling optionally does log a connection line
before forking (the code in both cases dates from before the start of git
usage),
so that comment is bogus. And there is code in the logging lowlevel to detect
a logfile rotation, by name & inode number.

I'm certainly seeing mainlog held open by the daemon (per. lsof).

Do you run with the smtp_connection log selector enabled or disabled?
When you get an occurrence, is the daemon holding mainlog _and_ mainlog.1 open?
Does lsof show different NODE numbers for them? Is this a local filesystem?
