FWIW, a quick test with file content:
=======%%=======
# Lookup hosts file
127.0.0.1
::1
=======%%=======
... and a default hosts list separator, works perfectly for me.
Are you certain about the IPv6 addresses in question? What form
of "not seem to work" do you get?
