I don't know if this is appropriate for this list but I thought this
might be of interest to some:
Mozilla Thunderbird has an automatic email configuration wizard which is
at present not interoperable with Exim in common configurations because
it does not wait for the connection greeting before sending its EHLO
which in turn causes Exim to close the connection and Thunderbird to
fail to detect if the server offers STARTTLS. The wizard is made for
users with little or no knowledge on this subject that rely on it
working correctly. Users will be frustrated and organizations will have
increased help desk costs.
Based on a suggestion in the bug tracker entry for this issue [1] I
developed a simple patch to fix it. Based on my experience it can be
difficult to get fixes into Mozilla products, especially for Thunderbird
for which Mozilla withdrew development resources. So I wanted to ask you
to perhaps test the patch and use the voting function to make the
importance of the issue clear to Mozilla and help to close this five
year old entry.
