this option ok or is there something more semantically more correct?
Log term it may be a better option to support something like zlib directly for
writing compressed message formats transparently. A quick look shows this would
not be to difficult just using zlib (and supporting gz format). It would
probably be much more involved to support multiple compression backends such as
bzip2, lzma, xz, etc.
For now, this patch for the transport_pipe seems like the easiest solution.
