Both forms are incorrect, PLAIN should be followed by base64-encoded
string with name and password delimited by NULL character.
So, it should be
AUTH PLAIN d2Vic2FsZXNAZXhzcG9ydGVlLmJpegB0ZXN0UGFzc3dvcmQ=
in your example. Consult RFC for details.
