Last time I touched the dovecot code, I tested against Dovecot 2.1.10, per the
commit message in git.
The documentation explicitly says that initially, both sides send handshakes;
there was previously no problem with Exim waiting for Dovecot to do so. It
appears that Dovecot has changed, here.
Arguably, per the v2 spec, Exim should be sending the handshake message
entirely, before waiting for something from the dovecot server (but so should
Dovecot). So we probably should change; I'd be inclined to consider a
behaviour tuning option so that folks can roll back the change if it does break
with older Dovecot -- we already can see evidence that Dovecot _has_ changed
here, so there's no reason to believe that a change tested against current code
would work with older Dovecot.
