Hi,

yes, |ab matches to an empty string. In pcretest:

PCRE version 8.36-RC1 2014-04-21

re> /|ab/
data> ab
0:

It is likely that pcregrep uses PCRE_NOTEMPTY flag for searching patterns.
Let's wait for Philip comment on this.
