Just had another look at this, and found there is related code inside the
pcrecpp.cc file:

I don't know if this ties in with the code in configure.ac, or is another way
of achieving the same thing.
I am strongly tempted to remove all this stuff from the next release, with a
big warning notice in NEWS. What do other people think?
