If a new stable release is expected soon, I should soon have access to
it, because I run Arch Linux, which is fairly "bleeding edge". The
version of libtool that is currently installed on my box is 2.4.2-12.
The next release of PCRE is not expected for a month or two, so perhaps
by then the new libtool will be out.

I'm afraid I do not like the idea of trying to work with an alpha source
release, especially as I do not know much about libtool. However, you
may be able to do something yourself. In the repository

svn://vcs.exim.org/pcre/code/trunk

there is a file called "autogen.sh" which is a shell script that does
the libtool stuff. If you copy this file into the PCRE 8.34 directory
(8.34 is the latest release) and run it, followed by ./configure etc.,
perhaps it will solve your problem.
