The Exim smtp transport has several timeout settings.

    transport_filter_timeout = 5m
    command_timeout = 5m
    connect_timeout = 5m
    data_timeout = 5m
    final_timeout = 10m


You should consult the Exim Spec to get more information about the
indiviual settings.

But first I'd ask what do you expect. Why do you mind the timeouts? You
have a line error, ok. But if there is no error, how do you know a good
lower value for the timeout, probably you're talking to a slow server.

The overall performance should not suffer too much, as more queue
runners will be started (if you use the conventional setup) as time goes
on.

Why do you obfuscate your own IP, but not the remote side? Because you
do e-mail marketing?
