We are still batting around preliminary ideas. My intent is that when we
have some kind of proposal it should be published for comment, before
any work is actually done. I don't want to rush things, but I think we
are getting towards the time when an actual proposal should be written.

(I think you meant #1357.) The idea of a new API has been around for
quite a while - at least since #1174 (November 2011) - but until now
lots of other work has taken precedence.
