Hi all,

I think that with the moment you release NPCRE you will surely spent
some time discussing why little feature foo or small performance
improvement bar shouldn't find their way into a stable release of old
PCRE, besides security related or not so security related bug fixes.
Every bug fixed in old PCRE highers the chance people will stay with
that version, because "it simply works" and if it doesn't you will
discuss with them if it can be fixed "just one more time".

A wrapper for the old API is only of benefit for those applications
which don't have problems with dependencies for newly developed code
and therefore in theory could upgrade any time to the new API on their
own. If dependencies of newly developed code are the problem the
wrapper won't give any benefit but people will stay with the old API
until it's absolutely necessary to upgrade. Maybe resulting in the
discussions mentioned above.

From my point of view it's more about dependencies an compatibility of
the code for the new library, than focusing on the API itself: If you
manage to not change implementation details of PCRE which maybe
anyone relies on, even if he/she doesn't know today, in an incompatible
way and don't change the dependencies than a wrapper for the old API
surely is a good thing. Quite some projects will already use some kind
of wrapper around the old API anyway, like pcrecpp and therefore don't
care much about an additional one. Those projects which are highly
optimized for speed etc. may have the least problems to upgrade to
new APIs because they maybe benefit most and most of every one else
who directly uses the old API surely focus on those main features
which can be implemented in a compatible way using a wrapper.

+1 for a wrapper

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
