When the PCRE_JAVASCRIPT_COMPAT option is set, a lone square bracket causes an
error.

It seems however that this is nowadays a valid expression in JavaScript. With
latest nodejs for example:

$ cat test1.js
new RegExp("]");
$ nodejs test1.js
$

$ cat test2.js
new RegExp("*");
$ nodejs test2.js

/home/shausman/test2.js:1
new RegExp("*");
    ^
