Checked the book. Indeed, in order "To enable C++ comments in C, you must compile with c99, or with the SSCOMM or LANGLVL(STDC99) or LANGLVL(EXTC99) options." So you could do it but it requires a specific compile option. Not a good idea!
I would stick to the policy of avoiding C++ style comments.

I will check the z/OS-z/VM compiler and let you know, but it should work since it IS a C/C++ compiler (believe it or not but the good Ol' mainframe does have all the new technologies like C++, DLL, POSIX style UNIX services at al). The VM was actually invented here :)
