I believe that the consensus of the developers in the past has been:

* SMTP Callouts to systems under your control (calling "forward"): is
absolutely reasonable and a suitable solution to deploy in some cases
* SMTP Callouts to systems not under your control, calling back to the
sender's site, not under your control: is ethically more dubious and if the
operators of servers who receive such callbacks from you choose to blacklist
you as a result, they're entirely entitled to do so. We'll try to make the
feature work, to avoid causing more general pain, but we don't encourage it.

Adding to the burden of callouts on the system which receives them, by
extending the amount of work done, seems to me to be even more dubious. I'm
not fixed in my conviction, but I think that I'm currently opposed to such a
change.
