Note that between ./autogen.sh and "make dist", you need to run
./configure with the options that should be reflected in the *.h.generic
files. It's likely that your tree was already configured with everything
turned on for development purposes.

Anyway, I double-checked this in my own tree. You may want to capture the
output of "make distcheck" to see what's going on; you'll see the
*.h.generic files generated first thing, and then no mention of them
again.

(I should also point out that my patch only tweaks the pcre.h.generic
makefile rule. The purpose of my changes was to have config.h.generic
generated in the makefile as well.)
