Should be easy to create a coverage report with continuous integration; is
there CI set up for PCRE somewhere?

I haven't ever worked with cmake, and while searching the web did show some
results, I didn't see a ready-to-use recipe, so I'll leave that to someone more
experienced with cmake. Although... since this is a developer-only tool, would
it be so bad to just say you have to use auto* if you want coverage reports?
