Zoltan, thanks. It turned out to be a combination of two things:
1- A stack issue (as you suggested),
2- Attempting to parse a huge string with a big regex.

I've since fixed the problem. I hope the segfault is still interesting to you.
I should mention that the version number is misleading - this is Debian
symlinking old library versions to each other. I'm actually using the latest
8.* build in the Debian Squeeze repository.
