Here's a simple case to re-produce:

PCRE version 8.12 2011-01-15

re> /(?(R)a+|(?R)b)/
Failed: recursive call could loop indefinitely at offset 13

There's no way this regular expression could loop indefinitely, since (?R) is
part of the else section of a conditional that checks for recursion.
