Some numbers from our site from yesterday 25.05.:

On connections to 117 IPs my patched exim detected that 8to7 conversion would
be necessary since the host did not announce 8BITMIME and encoding was 8bit.

56 (close to 50%) of them claimed to be exim in the banner.

The rest is a mix of large ISPs (aol, web.de, hosteurope), cisco PIX (*******),
spamfilter proxies, obfuscated greetings and some rare products.

Our MX hosts received
~191000 messages (250 ok after data)
~50000 message of them were flagged either 7 or 8 Bit using BODY=
~44000 of them were 8bit

Since lots of our students (univie.ac.at) are forwarding to freemail services
we relay a lot:
~13000 8bit messages were relayed to the outer world again
~3500 of the 8bit messages were transferred to hosts not announcing 8BITMIME

Mail submitted to our MSAs is mostly not flagged. Most of our users use
thunderbird and all our unix hosts use exim. I can't get any numbers out of
them.

Based on these numbers I assume that I would have heard many complaints about
broken encoding if all these hosts not announcing 8BITMIME are not "8bit clean"
since we use accept_8bitmime for some years now.

But there was not a single one related to 8bit. We had complaints but they were
all caused by wrong charset definitions.

Greetings, Wolfgang
