Without looking at the code, I cannot say how easy this would be to do
*in practice*.

OK, I give in. I will take a look at this in due course. I have started
working through the list of issues for PCRE and this one is now number
21 on the list. It may take some weeks before I get to it. I do not
promise to make any changes ... it will depend on the structure of the
existing code and how I feel about changing it.
