Many thanks for your reply.

I've looked at it again and top doesn't show anything that looks out of the
ordinary. The exim process shows 0.0 cpu usage and between 0.1 and 0.2
memory usage.

I have run strace on the process Id that the google mail was coming in on
which I have pasted below (at least, the last few lines - it is a large
mail). However, I'll admin I don't really understand the contents of the
trace. There is a 'Bad file descriptor' line before the log file is opened.

I'm a bit reluctant to compile Exim from scratch as the current set-up is
running Ubuntu 9.04 LTS and is on a third party server. However I will do
this at a last resort.
