It should work equally well with fetchmail which can be made to talk
SMTP to Exim in the same way a remote mail server would.

An interesting method but I think my approach is a bit simpler:

system_aliases:
driver = redirect
allow_fail
allow_defer
data = ${lookup{$local_part}wildlsearch{/etc/aliases}}
user = mailnull
group = mail
file_transport = address_file
pipe_transport = address_pipe

I.E. just change lsearch to wildsearch in the default configuration for
the system_aliases router.

Then to allow user mike to use wildcard email names just
edit /etc/aliases with a line like this

^mike-.*: mike

... without the need for the user to have to set up any files.
