Andreas, your points are well made, I read and then forgot them until I came to
close this bug with 4.73 released. Oops.
On reflection, rather than endlessly mutate a bug for whatever we want to do
with ClamAV support, I think it's better to open a new bug, so that's what I've
done.
Bug 1060 opened to have more flexibility in the ClamAV invocation.
Closing this bug as the deprecated API is no longer used by default as of 4.73,
which has now been released.
