When I tested this with the forthcoming 8.11 release, the bug was no longer
present (I can reproduce with 7.9; have not tried any other releases). There
have been changes to (*SKIP) etc along the way, so I guess one of them must
have fixed it. I'm not really inclined to spend time figuring out exactly which
change did.
