Hi Chris

Yours is the only message that starts to help. Thank you.

Cheers, Chris.

Yes that is the exact situation. I have done some more fooling around
after I read your message and have tried filling in better information
in swaks with the following result:

root@cruncher:/etc/exim4# swaks --ehlo gary719_list1 --from
gary719_list1@??? --auth --au *my login name* --ap *my password
*--to *another account*@??? --server outgoing.verizon.net

How can <- 235 2.7.0 CRAM-MD5 authentication successful. occure and
then get an
** 550 5.7.1 Authentication is required to send mail as
<*codestring*@???> error message.

There is no entry in /var/log/exim4/mainlog for this transaction. The
use of Exim directly is out of the question since I can get no control
over the output. If I can get swaks to work then maybe I can figure out
how to change the exim4 files to fix the problem. I tried exim -d a
while ago an found that Verizon has white listed (spammer) that output.
I assume it is only that output since I am still receiving and sending
email.
