I didn't do anything, but I suspect the bug was in automake, which is
used to generate the configure scripts, and somebody mended that. I do
keep my Gentoo Linux system fairly up-to-date, but I can't remember
whether automake was recently updated. Anyway, I'm glad this is solved.
