First try a full-house Exim debug run.
That should display the path that is being returned on the lookup.
A guess says that the error message is correct, and there is something
indeterminate or even wild-carded in that return. And/or the expansion call code
ITSELF is being seen - not the sought-after result of expanding it.
That may not be the only thing amiss, but a debug run will let you track each
problem down and address them in order.
