In pseudoshell it's the difference between:

martin@olga:~$ host 212.13.195.161
161.195.13.212.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer olga.hinterlands.org.

and

martin@olga:~$ host 6.7.8.9
Host 9.8.7.6.in-addr.arpa. not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

and

martin@olga:~$ host 212.13.195.161
