Both. Depends on public_name being used. For PLAIN, username is stored
in $auth2 and password in $auth3. For LOGIN, username is $auth1 and
password in $auth2. For NTLM I have no idea.
If using Dovecot authentication with Exim, note that Exim will abort if
authenticating against Dovecot 2.0. See this post:
