I agree completely it's not a great feature. As for modern software
supporting it, the software my company sells was using the UCB regex
library until 2008, when we upgraded to use PCRE in order to have a
UTF8-aware regular expression engine.

If you tell me a patch to support [[:<:]] isn't likely to be accepted,
I'll happily abandon any effort to fix it. We never documented this
extension, it was just latent in the source code we used, so I don't think
we have ANY customers who depend on the feature. The only reason I
even know about it is that a customer tried it; was surprised it worked in
the old release (since it was undocumented) and submitted a PR
asking if it was okay to use.

OTOH, if despite its hackiness, if there is a sense of a value to having a
shorthand notation for the word-contextual equivalent to ^ and $, then I'd
be
happy to write and contribute the necessary code.

...oh, and note that the date for the web page you quote is 25 Oct 1995. I
think that's a bit old. Does any modern software support these things?
