Since the rest of the message suggests you value the groupware features of
Exchange, a better idea might be to use Exim to filter incoming SMTP mail
and then hand the good mail off to the Exchange server for eventual
delivery. You get to have Exim do what it does very well, and you cover for
one of the most significant limitations of Exchange (its state-of-the-90s
spam filtering). You can use LDAP or SMTP callouts to the Exchange server to
verify users, and you can run Exim on another box or in a virtual machine on
the Exchange server.
