Did you try to quote the entire „${lookup...fail}” part?

"${lookup ldap{LDAPBASEURL ldap:///dc=example,dc=com?proxyAddress=smtp?sub?(&(objectClass=Person)(mail=${local_part}@${domain}))}{$value}fail}"
