'ping' (at defaults) sends quite small packets, and doesn't look for anything
more complex than a return coming back to it.
traceroute is a bit more complex.
smtp (can | may) push the bandwidth envelope a bit harder still - more
especially if it has to Base-64 encode moderate-sized, but *multi-page*
fax-as-graphics files.
