I don't know but it fits the pattern. As Richard said, it's possibly
the law of unintended consequences.

My RE was not wholly correct - /^v.*ra$/i would have been better.

There are not many English words that match /^v.*ra$/i :-

dave@sage $ grep -i '^v.*ra$' /usr/share/dict/british-english
Vera
Viagra
vertebra
viscera

You could try creating an account such as vertebra@domain or
viscera@domain and see what happens (I have visions of all those badly
configured spam filters that this will go through seeing all the v*ra
words and beating me to death with backscatter :-)

Did she not get a bounce message ?

Yes that would but I was guessing at the RE, it could be /^v.*ra$/i
and that would match vera but not vera.surname though it would match
vera.surnama if she's Italian :-)
